A Few Thoughts On the Current State of “The Sweet Science”

2/16/13

It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog, partly because February has been a slow month for boxing.  Thank goodness boxing picks up in March and April with a lot of good, exciting, and high quality bouts.  With that being said, here are a few thoughts of what’s going on in boxing.

When I look at the boxing landscape, I see that the Jr. Featherweight Division (122lbs.) is the best division right now in boxing.  You have Nonito Donaire, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Leo Santa Cruz, at the top of the division. There’s also solid contenders like Wilfredo Vasquez Jr, Vic Darchinyan, and Christian Mijares itching for a title shot.  You also have young up and coming contenders like Scott Quigg of England and Peter Frampton of Ireland who are making waves and on the edge of a title shot.  To top it off, the top dogs in the division are fighting each other as Donaire and Rigondeaux are set to square off on April 13 in New York on HBO.  Bottom line, Jr. Featherweight is loaded!

I know that Danny Garcia is the WBC and Ring Magazine Jr. Welterweight (140lbs.) champion of the world, but I’m saying flat-out that Lucas Matthysse is the best Jr. Welterweight fighter in the world.  I’m not hating on Garcia, but I don’t give him full credit for beating a chinny, but talented Amir Khan and an old and out of shape Erik Morales.  I’m sorry, but I’m more impressed with Matthysse’s losses against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander (current IBF Welterweight Champ), fights that I believe Matthysse won.  Since those losses, Matthysse has improved greatly and been on a destructive roll.  Matthysse is Garcia’s mandatory contender and there’s quite a buzz within boxing social media about these two fighting.  Who would win if and when they finally fight?  I say Matthysse knocks Garcia out inside 8 rounds.  The issue is, will Danny Garcia actually get in the ring and fight Matthysse?  Knowing how dangerous Lucas Matthysse is, it’s a wait and see.

Adrien Broner is set to defend his WBC Lightweight title tonight against Gavin Rees tonight on HBO in Atlantic City.  I was skeptical of Broner at first, but not anymore.  Adrien Broner is the next superstar in boxing and is clearly the best in the division.  The only worthy fight for Broner at lightweight is WBO Lightweight Champion Ricky Burns.  The problem is that Burns, set to fight IBF champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16, has already turned down a fight against Burns TWICE. Broner is not only the best Lightweight in the world, I think that he’s the best fighter at 135 and 140lbs, and the only fighter I see that has a chance to beat him is Lucas Matthysse at 140.  I consider Broner elite and a future pound for pound king.

I’ve said for months that Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez are gonna fight in September in a mega-bucks showdown.  Well the set up bouts for both are to happen on May 4 as both Mayweather and Alvarez co-headline a card at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Mayweather is scheduled to fight Robert Gurerrero while Alvarez is set to fight Austin Trout.  While Canelo has the tougher assignment (Guerrero will be no pushover for “Money” Mayweather), both should win setting up a huge battle in September.  My early prediction on a potential Mayweather – Canelo clash?  I’ll go with Mayweather…. for now.

While February is a slow month for boxing, I can’t wait for boxing coming up not only in March and April, but for the rest of the year.  Here’s hoping to bigger and better for the sweet science for the rest of the year.  To quote words of recently announced Hall of Fame referee Mills Lane, “Let’s get it on!”
