Jhonny Gonzalez Scores a Shocking One Round Stoppage of Abner Mares to Regain WBC Featherweight Tile

Jhonny Gonzalez  has always been hot and cold, up and down as a fighter. One fight, he will step up and beat a fighter in which he’s expected to lose to, while on another night he will lose to a fighter he’s expected to beat. On Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, Ca., the hot Jhonny Gonzalez showed up and showed up in a big way scoring possibly the upset of the year in 2013 with a shocking first round stoppage of previously undefeated and defending WBC Featherweight champion Abner Mares.

Mares (26-1-1, 13 KOs), making the first defense of the WBC crown he won from Daniel Ponce De Leon this past May, was thought to be one of the rising stars heading into this fight.  A three-time world champion in three different weight divisions (Bantamweight, Jr. Featherweight, Featherweight), Mares was ranked as high as number 5 in the mythical pound 4 pound rankings for best boxer in the world by Ring Magazine (yeah I know The Ring’s ranking system has it’s flaws, but roll with me here).  At age 31 Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO’s) been through his fair share of wars was thought to be a fighter in decline. However, after a pretty mundane round one Gonzalez struck, putting Mares down with a left hook with 40 seconds to go in the round.  Mares got to his feet at the count of seven, but was wobbly on his feet. Gonzalez would not be denied, as he followed with an assault of punches culminating with a right hand/left hook that put Mares down again with 10 seconds to go in the round.  At that point, referee had seem enough as Mares was still hurt and he stopped the fight. Boom, just like that the fight was over before it really got started and shock waves were sent throughout the boxing world.

As for the future for both Gonzalez and Mares, it’s still to be determined.  Jhonny Gonzalez is back on top and a world champion once again, at least for now. Interesting bouts for him would be a rematch with Daniel Ponce De Leon who beat took the Featherweight title from Gonzalez last November as well as high-profile bout against the likes of Mikey Garcia and Gary Russell Jr could be in his future.  When it comes to Mares, the future is interesting.  This was a case of Mares getting caught before he knew what happened to him.  An argument could also mean that he was a little overrated to begin with.  Mares still has a future in this business.  The question is, can he recover from this shocking loss mentally because between Jr. Featherweight and Featherweight, there are plenty of fights for him and money to be made.  I believe despite what happened to Mares on Saturday night, he can recover.  And hey, why not an eventual rematch between Gonzalez and Mares.

What looked like a ho-hum title defense on the upward trend for Abner Mares turned into quite possibly boxing’s biggest upset this year. This is boxing, anything is possible and expected the unexpected.  What happened Saturday night between Jhonny Gonzalez and Abner Mares is what makes “Sweet Science” so intriguing.  To use a title from a soap opera back in the day and apply it to boxing, oh, as the boxing world turns.

  1. To most of the world I do agree it was an upset, but not to myself . I studied and seen that Mares had trouble with guys that could box I studied the fight with him and Victor. I figured that if Gonzalez used his height, length, and don’t get careless it was going to be a easy night.
