It’s Official!!! Floyd Mayweather Will Fight Marcos Maidana On May 3

After months of speculation, back and forth discussion, and even a Floyd Mayweather poll to his fans asking who should he fight next, “Money” Mayweather announced on twitter yesterday (which happened to be his birthday, Happy Birthday Floyd) that he will fight Marcos Maidana on May 3. The fight, which is a Welterweight unification bout (Floyd is the WBC Champ, Maidaina is the WBA Champ) will be aired live on Showtime PPV from either the MGM Grand in Las Vegas or at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn.

Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) returns to the Welterweight division after defeating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last September winning the WBC Jr. Middleweight title in a Jr. Middleweight unification bout (Floyd also hold the WBA Jr. Middleweight champ). Floyd targeted two opponents for his next fight, Maidana and former Jr. Welterweight champ Amir Khan who really went out of his way to campaign for a fight with Mayweather. Ultimately, it was the WBA champ Maidana who won out.

Upon the announcement of the fight, Mayweather released a statement saying “Marcos Maidana’s last performance immediately brought him to my attention.”  “He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring. I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 others have tried to do before him — beat me.”

Maidana basically earned this opportunity to fight Mayweather with his win over Adrien Broner last December in Atlantic City to win the WBA Welterweight title. In reaction to landing a bout with Mayweather, Maidana said “I am extremely happy to be facing Floyd Mayweather because it will give me the opportunity to show the world that I am the best welterweight in the division. I just handed a great defensive fighter his first loss and I plan to do the same to Mayweather. I don’t care whether he’s the best and undefeated. I will bring some real Latino power to him on May 3rd.”

Will Mayweather – Maidana do the business that Mayweather did with his fight with “Canelo” Alvarez last September? Absolutely not. Is this the best possible opponent for Mayweather? To even suggest that it is would be a boldface lie. Like everybody else, I want Mayweather to fight either Manny Pacquiao or Tim Bradley (who are fighting each other in a rematch on April 12). However, it’s a decent fight and Maidana is more deserving of this opportunity to fight Mayweather than Amir Khan. On paper Mayweather should win and win comfortably, but this is boxing and you never know. Plus, Maidana with his power and aggressive style is always dangerous. I’m just hoping that this turns out to be a halfway decent bout. Lets see what happens.
