Roc Nation Makes It’s Foray Into Boxing!!!

On Sunday in a stunner, Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports stomped into the boxing world as they won the purse bid on Monday at the WBO headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico as they gained the promotional rights to the upcoming WBO Middleweight championship bout between champion Peter Quillin and mandatory challenger Matt Korobov. Roc Nation outbid both Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank to secure the fight. Roc Nation Sports announced it’s plans to become involved in boxing to ESPN.com on Sunday.

What made this move surprising was not only that Roc Nation has decided to enter the world of The Sweet Science, it was the amount they decided to bid for Quillin – Korobov. The $1.9 million easily Golden Boy’s bid of $1.2 million and Top Rank’s offer of $500,000. In fact, the bid of Roc Nation Sports surpassed the bids of Golden Boy and Top Rank combined! A Surprise move by Roc Nation especially when you consider that Roc Nation has no ties to either Quillin or Korobov (Quillin is promoted by Golden Boy while Korobov is promoted by Top Rank). The Quillin – Korobov must now take place within the next 90 days and tentative plans are for the the bout to take place on November 8 in either New York or Washington D.C.

This right here is what you call a power move by Roc Nation Sports and they are definitely trying to make a statement going to this length to outbid both Golden Boy and Top Rank. The question now is, how successful will they be. Roc Nation Sports currently has no fighters in their stable. Hopefully, they have learned from the success of powerhouse promoter like Golden Boy, Top Rank, and Matchroom Sports over in England. More importantly, they have learned from the mistakes of 50 Cent, whose career in boxing has been hit and miss at this point (largely miss). As far as the future for Roc Nation, I’m hopeful that they will be able to make moves, become a new player and bring some fresh energy in boxing. Time will definitely tell and fight fans will be watching.
