On This Day Twenty Years Ago…

You know that you’re getting old when certain fights from back in the day seemed like it just happened yesterday or last week. Well for me, the fight between James Toney and Roy Jones, Jr is one of those fights and represents one of those moments. Well for those who don’t know, on November 18, 1994 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, James Toney defended his IBF Super Middleweight title against IBF Middleweight champion Roy Jones in what was the most anticipated bout of 1994. Jones defeated Toney by unanimous one-sided decision and rose to superstardom while Toney, considered one of the best boxers in the sport at the time, was never really the same again. Given that this is the 20th anniversary of Toney – Jones, I decided post this fight up for everyone to revisit. Watch and enjoy what many argue is not only the biggest win, but the best performance in the career of Roy Jones.

  1. Just watched this fight for the first time about 2 weeks ago. Really disappointing performance by Toney, which might have been due to the weight cutting. but you still can’t take anything away from Roy Jones Jr.

He stepped up against his stiffest competition and flat out dominated from the opening bell to the last.
