Those of you of a certain age (ahem, that would be me… dang I’m getting old) who are serious boxing fans remember former long reigning Jr. Featherweight champion Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu. For those unaware, Bungu was a very good fighter from the 1990’s and I would argue was the best Jr. Featherweight of that era. Winning the IBF Jr. Featherweight title against Kennedy McKinney in 1994 in what was regarded as the upset of the year by Ring Magazine, Bungu went on to make 13 defenses of the title and reigned as champion for over five years. Check out this profile of Bungu leading up to his 13th and final Jr. Featherweight title defense, a rematch against Victor Llerena. For the record, the rematch with Llerena took place on Feb. 6, 1994 in Hammanskraal, South Africa with Bungu retaining the title by seventh round technical decision as Llerena retired in his corner refusing to come out for round eight. Enjoy and learn about the career of Vuyani Bungu.
