WBC Flyweight champion and the man many consider the top pound for pound fighter in the world right now Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez will next fight Giovanni Segura, rumored to be on March 5 in Los Angeles as a co-feature on a card headlined by WBA/IBF Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. When I first heard about this, admittedly I was like huh?! I mean, Segura is past his prime in the opinion of a lot of folks. This is nothing but a showcase for the Flyweight kingpin. I wanted Gonzalez next outing to be against a better opponent and Segura is a step back from his last opponent, Brian Viloria.

Then I read what looks to be the eventual plan for “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KO’s) moving forward.  If successful against Segura, Look for Gonzalez to move up to Super Flyweight to challenge current WBC 115lb champ Carlos Cuadras (34-0-1, 26 KO’s) this summer. Now for those who have never seen Cuadras, I suggest you go to YouTube and look up some of his fights because Cuadras is far from a pushover. In a potential Roman Gonzalez – Carlos Cuadras fight would I favor Gonzalez? Yes, but Caudras will definitely make that fight competitive and would give “Chocolatito” some troubles.

Now here’s what’s really interesting here. Rumors are that Japanese sensation and current WBO Jr. Bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue is set to fight in the U.S. at some point during the first half of 2016, most likely on HBO. I know this is early speculation, but should Roman Gonzalez defeat both Giovani Segura and Carlos Cuadras, could we see a possible Gonzalez – Inoue mega-showdown towards the end of this year? Now if you’re a hardcore boxing geek, you know that a Gonzalez – Inoue showdown is a pretty significant fight, a bout that has the mouths of us hardcore boxing heads watering. If that is indeed the end game…oh boy!
