Pound 4 Pound Boxing Report  has learned that on Tuesday, Top Rank announced the signing of Japanese Jr. Welterweight contender Hiroki Okada. The Tokyo, Japan born and raised Okada will make his Top Rank (and U.S.) debut on September 14 in Fresno, California on the undercard of WBC Jr. Welterweight champion Jose Ramirez title defense Antonio Orozco.

Top Rank signs Hiroki Okada

Currently ranked in the top 10 by all major sanctioning organizations (no. 9 by the WBC, no. 4 by the WBA, no, 5 by the IBF, no. 4 by the WBO), Okada’s (18-0, 13 KO’s) opponent for his Top Rank debut will be against Cristian Rafael Coria (27-6-2, 11 KO’s). Should Okada defeat Coria next month, could this lead to an eventual shot against WBC Jose Ramirez (if Ramirez successfully defends his title against Orozco) at some point in 2019? Only time will tell.

A former Japanese as well as WBO Asia Pacific Jr. Welterweight champion, the best win on Okada’s record is a 6th round stoppage over Jose Pagara in December 2017 in Tokyo. An orthodox fighter with good height for the Jr. Welterweight division (5’9”) Okada is a boxer-puncher who can fight on the front and back foot. The feeling among Japanese boxing observers has been that as good as Okada has looked, he the ability to raise his game and fight at higher level.
