September 14th… What a Night For Boxing!

In the sports world, this time of year is known as the dog days of summer.  The dog days have extended into boxing.  Given that there hasn’t been many high-profile and attractive fights during the month of July that has drawn great interest, I will ponder on what’s coming up in the boxing landscape in the next few months. With that being said, I can’t wait for September 14, which is the biggest night in boxing.  Not only is this boxing’s biggest night, September 14th may be the biggest night and best boxing cards in boxing in at least a decade.  Boy am I looking forward to it, and so are boxing fans all around the world.

For folks who don’t know (or not fans of the ‘Sweet Science’), September 14th is the date of the most highly anticipated fight of 2013 as Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez square off in Las Vegas in a unification of Mayweather’s WBA and Alvarez WBC Jr. Middleweight titles in Las Vegas.  This fight alone has boxing fans buzzing and has even drawn the attention of the mainstream sports world. Mayweather – Alvarez is arguably the biggest bout in boxing since Floyd’s win over Oscar De La Hoya in May 2007.

If that isn’t enough to tantalize fight fans, it’s the under-card of Mayweather – Alvarez that has boxing fans beyond excited.  You have former Jr. Middleweight champion Austin Trout, fresh off his close and exciting loss to Alvarez this past April, returning to the ring to face top Jr. Middleweight contender Erislandy Lara.  This is an elimination bout (Lara is ranked 1st according to the WBA, while Trout is ranked 2nd) and sets up a title opportunity for the winner.  Kudos to both Trout and Lara for taking such a tough challenge.  This is one of the better fights that can be made in the Jr. Middleweight division

If Mayweather – Alvarez is the most anticipated bout of 2013 for mainstream boxing fans, it can be argued that the other under-card bout, Danny Garcia defending his WBC/WBA Super Light Titles against mandatory contender Lucas Matthysse, is the fight that has the mouths of hardcore boxing fans watering.  Matthysse, who may be the hottest name in the sport right now, has been on a roll and is coming off of a 3rd round destruction of current IBF Jr. Welterweight champ this past May.  Garcia is coming off of a hard-fought win over former Jr. Welterweight and Welterweight champ Zab Judah this past April.  Many fans wondered whether Garcia would ultimately get in the ring with Matthysse, but the contract has been signed and the fight is a go.  There is also an underlying factor heading into this fight and that is Angel Garcia, the trash talking and foul-mouthed father/trainer of Danny who is known for pushing the envelope.  In the lead up towards the bout with Matthysse, Angel Garcia has already started with the trash talk.  This bout should be fun, for as long as it lasts.  Garcia – Matthysse will settle once and for all who is the best Jr. Welterweight in the world.

I know for boxing fans, hardcore fans like myself in particular, boxing has been really slow this summer.  However, be patient because boxing is about to warm up.  So don’t worry and ride it out for the next couple of months, because on Sept. 14 during a hot summer night in Las Vegas, boxing will be white-hot.  Remember, good things comes to those who wait and I’m willing to wait because in a couple of months, boxing will not only be good, it will be great!
