Pound 4 Pound Boxing Report Weekly Recap (July 28 – Aug. 3)

While I know I’m late with this weekly recap/wrap-up (hey a brotha was busy, my apologies), I had to chime in on what went down (or what didn’t go down) last week. Truth be told, the week was highlighted by the announcement of a huge Light Heavyweight unification match between WBA/IBF champ Bernard Hopkins and WBO champ Sergey Kovalev set for November 8. Thank goodness for that because what went down in the ring was to be polite not up to snuff. With that being said, here’s a breakdown of what went on.

 

1. Kovalev Crushes Caparello, next up “The Alien” – The big story heading into Sergey Kovalev’s title defense against Blake Caparello last Saturday night at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City was that an agreement had been reached for fight between Kovalev and Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins to fight on Nov. 8 at a site to be determined provided that Kovalev defeats Caparello. Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs), known as “The Crusher” taking care of business and stopping Caparello in two rounds. Caparello (19-1-1, 6 KOs) did knock down Kovalev with a left hand in round one, but it seemed to be more of a case of Caparello stepping on Kovalev’s foot while he threw a punch. Kovalev simply dusted himself off and got to work in round two putting Caparello down courtesy of a right hand to the body, then knocking down twice more to end matters at the one minute, forty-seven second mark of the second. Afterwards both Kovalev and Hopkins were interviewed by Max Kellerman to discuss their upcoming showdown and on Monday their bout was officially announced. This is arguably the most anticipated bout of the year (especially by hardcore fight fans) and there will be plenty of talk during the lead up. I’m already pumped up about it beyond excited for this one.

2. Brandon Rios defeats Diego Chaves by DQ9, but bout ruined by Drakulich – Yeah, Rios won this bout by disqualification, but the story of this story was the actions of referee Vic Drakulich, who put on one of the more pathetic displays of refereeing that I’ve seen in a while. As far as the fight, it was decent action bout. Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) got off to a good start early, being active and landing his customary body shots. However starting in round four Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs) began to get his groove, using effective movement and really finding a home for his right hand. Throughout the bout there was fouling and dirty tactics by each fighter with both Rios and Chaves having points deducted. At the time of the DQ, Chaves was up 75-74 on two scorecards while Rios was up 75-74 on the third scorecard. Bottom line that Drakulich totally lost control of the bout as both Rios and Chaves were doing so much dirty stuff throughout and Drakulich failed to put a handle on things and the infraction that const Chaves the bout was more than questionable. Should Rios and Chaves stage a rematch? Yes, but if it should happen, let’s have it without Vic Drakulich as the referee.

3. Never Fight Jesse Vargas in Las Vegas – It’s not that Vargas didn’t deserve the win (25-0, 9 KOs) over Anton Novikov (29-1, 10 KOs) last Saturday night in Las Vegas, it was the width of the scores in his favor that has folks heated. The fact that the hometown favorite won by scores of 118-111 (twice) and 117-111 is not just ridiculous, but insulting to those who watch boxing and have an idea of what goes on inside the ring. For the record this was nip and tuck battle as Vargas got off to a good start early but over the second half of the bout Novikov came on strong and had he better of things. I can see a one, two, or even three-point win for either fighter, but a six and seven point victory in favor of Vargas was a complete joke. This isn’t the first time that Vargas has had the benefit of the bout fighting in his hometown of Las Vegas and sadly, I suspect it will not be the last.

4. Thomas Williams Jr. Comes Up Small – Sorry to be so blunt, but that’s what happened to Williams Friday night against former Light Heavyweight champ Gabriel Campillo. Williams was a fast rising, hot prospect who a lot of people were keeping their eye on and was on the precipice of becoming a mandatory title contender against a Campillo (24-6-1, 10 KOs) who was on the verge of retirement. Early on Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) got of to a good start winning the first three rounds. Starting in round four, things began to fall apart for Williams he suffered a blood nose and cut. Things went downhill for Williams right then and there as Williams became completely unglued as he lost all composure. In round five, his body language became totally negative as be began to fight defensively and constantly complained to referee Ray Corona. At the end of the fifth, Williams corner called the referee over and he promptly stopped the fight. Bottom line, this was huge disappointing performance by Williams, huge!

5. The Return of Andre Dirrell – Coming off a 18 month layoff due to promotional issues Dirrell (22-1, 15 KOs) returned to the ring with a fifth round stoppage over Vladine Biosse and looked fairly good considering the long layoff. OK, Biosse was an opponent who wasn’t supposed to give Dirrell trouble, but yet in still Dirrell was fairly sharp. Dirrell was a little tentative early on, but really started to step it up in round four and finished matters in round five. It’s interesting where Dirrell goes from here. Now 30, it’s obvious the talent is still there and this is the same fighter who gave Carl Froch a very good fight in 2010 and was dominating Arthur Abraham before getting hit and knocked cold with a cheap shot. Dirrell still needs some more fights, but look for him to be back in the title picture in the near future.

 

The week was marred by disappointments and questionable scoring and refereeing. I would say that there would be something better to look forward to next week, but that would be strictly projecting on my part. The big fights are Showtime triple-header featuring  Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka, Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana, and Daniel Jacobs vs. Jarrod Fletcher. To be polite, that’s an underwhelming card. Hey, I could be wrong and this card could surprise me. I can only hope.
