Pound 4 Pound Boxing Report Weekly Recap (Sept. 8-14)

Mayweather - Maidana II2

By. BrotherJR

September 17, 2014

Lets not beat around the bush here. We all know what the big fight was this week and what dominated the boxing discussion this week, and that was the rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana. If you have any kind of blog, podcast, YouTube show or anything boxing related, this was the event of the week and one of the week and really the biggest boxing event of the year. Did anything else really matter? No, not really. However, there were some other boxing news/fights that did go down this past week. So with that being said, lets recap this past week in boxing.

1. No Trouble For “Money” Mayweather This Time – When Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana fought the first time in May, the fight surprised many because Maidana ended up giving Mayweather one of the toughest fights of his career. In the rematch this last Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas it wasn’t nearly so tough for “Money”. Mayweather had his way and dominated Maidana cruising to an easy unanimous decision win to retain his WBC Welterweight title. In the first fight Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) had issues dealing with Maidana’s aggressive and physical style as well as his roughhouse (and many would say dirty) tactics. This time Mayweather made adjustments by not venturing towards the ropes and keeping the fight more in the center of the ring. Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs). while just as aggressive as he was in their first fight, had no answers whatsoever. The most dramatic moments in the fight were at the end of round three when Maidana stunned Mayweather with a straight right, and in round eight when Maidana pulled a Luis Suarez and bit Mayweather on the left hand. Bottom line, it was Mayweather from beginning to end. What’s next for Mayweather? Well after the bout, he talked about a possible bout with Manny Pacquiao. Will it happen next? Who is to say. I mean we’ve had talk of that fight for years now and still no fight yet. If the fight that folks still want to see doesn’t happen, don’t be surprised if we see Mayweather fight Amir Khan. Mayweather – Khan has the potential to be a big money fight, especially if the fight happens in England. Let the saga that is Floyd Mayweather continue.

2. Leo Santa Cruz Retains His Super Bantamweight Title – Lets be blunt here, Santa Cruz title defense against Manuel Roman was a showcase bout and everyone knew it. Roman had done NOTHING to earn a title shot whatsoever. On the undercard of the Mayweather – Maidana rematch, Santa Cruz (28-0-1, 16 KOs) did what he was supposed to do and that was dominate Roman (17-3-3, 6 KOs) knocking him out in two rounds to retain the WBC title for the third time. No need for details needed here, as there was nothing in this match to really talk about. So, it’s on to what’s possibly next for Santa Cruz. Afterwards, Santa Cruz called out the divisions kingpin Guillermo Rigondeaux who holds the WBA Jr. Featherweight belt. Other future opponents could be newly crowned IBF champion Carl Frampton as well as WBA Interim titlist Scott Quigg. A bout against either Rigondeaux, Frampton, or Quigg would be terrific. Whatever is next for Santa Cruz, lets hope the opposition is better than what we saw against Roman.

3. Mickey Bey Upsets Miguel Vazquez To Win IBF Lightweight Title – Yeah, Bey (21-1-1, 10 KOs) won defeated Vazquez (34-4, 13 KOs) to win the IBF Lightweight title last Saturday in Las Vegas in a bout that he probably didn’t deserve. Yay, kudos to Bey who achieved his dream in becoming a world champion. However, if you want to know what a boring boxing bout is, this fight was it. This bout was filled with grabbing, holding, more grabbing and holding, feints and plenty of missed punches. Sorry if I didn’t provide in-depth commentary of this bout because it was basically a snooze-fest. Just a hideous fight that makes you wonder if the intent of the folks who set up this fight were on a mission to troll us.

4. The End May Be Near For Angulo – Alfred Angulo (22-5, 18 KOs) was on the comeback trail after consecutive loses to Erislandy Lara and Canelo Alvarez. On the undercard of Mayweather – Madana II in Las Vegas last Sagurday, Angulo moved up to the Middleweight division to take on James De La Rosa (23-2, 13 KOs) in a bout he was the heavy favorite. Well, thing went horribly wrong for Angulo as he was out-boxed and out-fought for the majority of this fight as De La Rosa upset Angulo by unanimous decision. Angulo fought with no real passion and lacked any real spark. The only time he perked up was during this 10-round contest were in the last two rounds in which he wobbled De La Rosa. It seems as if Angulo is done at the elite level of the sport and at this point, his career is at a serious crossroads.

5. Scott Quigg Makes Quick Work of Jamoye – Easy work for Quigg as he stopped late sub Stephane Jamoye in three rounds last Saturday in Manchester, England. Body shots were the key for Quigg (29-0-2, 22 KOs) as he focused on the gut of Jamoye (26-6, 16 KOs) early and stayed there throughout the bout. A powerful right hand to the body by Quigg finished matters with 47 seconds to go in round three. Now it’s on to hopefully the fight that a lot of folks want to see, a Jr. Featherweight showdown with newly crowned IBF Champion Carl Frampton sometime in 2015.

6. Keep Your Eye on Luis Ortiz – Ortiz is a Cuban Heavyweight defector who destroyed Lateef Kayode last Thursday in one round in Las Vegas. Some say the stoppage was a little quick, but eventually it was obvious that Ortiz was the bigger, more talented fighter and on his way to eventually taking Kayode out. Ortiz (22-0, 19 KOs) is an intriguing prospect. Though 35 and hasn’t faced A-level competition, the physical attributes are there as the 6′ 4″ 235 Heavyweight is skilled and can punch. I want to see more of him against better competition.

7. Pay Attention To Julian Williams and Errol Spence – Both Williams and Spence fought on the Ortiz – Kayode undercard in Las Vegas last Thursday. Williams (17-0-1, 10 KOs) is a rising Jr. Middleweight prospect from Philadelphia who defeated Eliezer Gonzalez by unanimous decision. Spence (14-0, 11 KOs), a 2012 Olympian from Desoto, stopped Noe Bolanos in two rounds. Why do I mentions these two fighters? Because they are two of the hottest young prospects in the sport right now and have the look of potential world champions.

Well there’s finally my weekly recap. While the Mayweather – Maidana rematch was the talk of the sport (and deservedly so), there was plenty of other bouts and fighters worthy of mentioning. On to the next and future happening in boxing.
